The release of our upcoming recovery device, the NANO, with a heat therapy element, has been generating major interest. However, here at Flow, we get asked, How is heat therapy good for you? What is heat therapy? Will it be beneficial to you?. This blog is going to give you all the information and answer why heat therapy is beneficial to everyone!

What is Heat Therapy?

Heat therapy comes in a variety of names; thermotherapy, thermal therapy, thermogenic therapy, and heat therapy. They all mean the same thing which is ‘applying an external product be it hardware, liquid, gel or spray to cause temporary temperature changes to a localised area’. It’s a common tool for medical professionals to have in their first aid bags or the changing room for the players. For your weekend warriors who need a little bit of relief, they will opt for heat remedies to provide ‘relief’ either physically or mentally. There’s a good chance you have come across it, used it yourself, or seen a friend, colleague, workout partner use them!

It’s more common than you think with products such as:

  • Deep heat gels
  • Heat Sprays
  • Microwaveable heat packs
  • Wearable heat devices
  • Portable handheld devices

How does it work?

By applying an external source of heat to the body it causes an almost instant change in heat to the area, this will often cause the skin around the targeted area to turn red to show signs of the increase in blood flow to the area as well as the heat application itself. Heat therapy works by improving circulation and blood flow to a particular area due to increased temperature. Increasing the temperature of the afflicted area even slightly can soothe discomfort and increase muscle flexibility. Heat therapy can relax and soothe muscles and heal damaged tissue.

Benefits?

  • Promotes blood flow to the area
  • Promotes muscle flexibility
  • Promotes joint mobility
  • Reduce the sensation of pain
  • Improved lymphatic drainage (the bodies internal waste system)

Conditions Heat Therapy can help

  • Headaches
  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Arthritis Hip pain
  • Glute pain
  • Leg pain
